Jade:

I told her it was a daft idea to go to the sheriff’s station in the middle of the bloody night! Did she listen to me – outside the bed – not at all. Many would claim this is just her progenitor obstinance, but I insist it’s all just Kacey. The difference is a subtle distinction, but meaningful to me.

To me, it’s like vampires who argue that they can’t control their thirst, because it’s against their nature. If that were actually true, then the entire human species would’ve gone extinct long ago. Kacey – especially in those days – didn’t like to listen to anyone else’s opinions and she always threw herself on every grenade she could find – as if she had a death wish.

Her constant pursuit of death terrified me because she was still very ill-equipped to handle the many myriad dangers our hostile world was throwing her way.

When the transforming car came back without Kacey, I felt my heart stop for several beats. There was no blood, no damage to the car, and no obvious signs of danger, but her void was all the ominous tidings I required to know something had gone pear-shaped.

“AI, where is Kacey? What’s happened?” I asked, and the transforming car – which had been a purple import model of some sort – was now a red F-150 Ford Truck.

“Kacey was taken by men wearing batches that spelled out FBI. I did some googling on the way home, that is apparently the federal human police force. They are the people the corrupt politicians send out to suppress their enemies – at least that’s what a nice man on one chatroom explained to me.”

I felt like I was scattered in ten-thousand different directions at once. The FBI had been relatively aggressive in their inquisition against vampires who they thought were guilty of any possible crime against humanity. They were known – in the past ten months – to contort and abuse the Patriot Act to deny vampires any legal rights.

“How many of them? What direction did they take her in?”

“I transformed a few times, and I followed them – blending in with their nondescript black SUVs. I tailed them to a place which was once a large brick factory. The entire building is extremely fortified and has limited approach vectors by which to access the inside. I surveyed the surroundings, and I managed to record some figures coming and going. I have managed to sort out twenty-seven distinct human signatures thus far. However, with the size of the brick factory, I fear that could just be the outermost guards.”

“Good, we’re going…” I said to the AI operated car.

“Yes, I figured as much, given your personality. It was a ninety-nine-point-nine-nine-nine-percent chance you would choose to act immediately.”

“Which is why the AI called me ahead of its arrival.” Calista said, as she skulked behind me.

“When did you…?!” I yelped in shock. It’d been over two centuries since anyone had snuck up on me. Calista seemed to make a habit of doing what no one could do – just to get a rise from me.
